Combining the Linguistics Of Gender with Human Science
Target Audience:
All Audiences
What is Gender? is Ryan's newest program offering. This presentation teaches the origins of gender and how it appears both in the English language and the human body.
What is Gender? It’s grammatical for some, linked to sex for many, and nothing to others.
What is Sex? A human's sex begins with an X, where it goes from there depends.
This is a fun and engaging program that encourages audience participation.

Becoming Ryan: Eating Disorder Recovery and Transition is a powerful presentation that interweaves current research on eating disorders with Ryan’s personal journey of recovery from anorexia nervosa, which began in 1999. Through this unique blend of lived experience and evidence-based insight, Ryan offers audiences a compelling look into the psychological and emotional complexities that fuel disordered eating, and the resilience required to heal.
Drawing from his own path through recovery and gender transition, Ryan helps audiences understand how identity, shame, control, and vulnerability intersect in the development and treatment of eating disorders. A STORY OF TWO COMING OUTS AND A TRANSITION.
Target Audience:
University and College Campuses
Since 2005, Ryan Sallans’s transition story, Scouting the Unknown, has captivated audiences on university campuses across the nation. The presentation begins with a foundational overview of human sexuality, exploring the relationship between sex, orientation, and gender. From there, Ryan transitions into his personal journey, one that began over two decades ago and continues to inspire reflection, dialogue, and growth.
Having transitioned twenty-one years ago, Ryan offers audiences a rare opportunity to engage directly. Participants are invited to ask questions about his experience, their own identities, or broader cultural shifts around gender and inclusion. The session closes with a powerful call to introspection: Ryan encourages attendees to reflect on their own challenges, identify sources of support, and honor the truths that shape who they are.
